Australian designer Phoebe Nicol describes her style as refined European classics in a sophisticated modern shell, when unexpected is ideally combined with traditional, and old with new. Her excellent taste Phoebe honed working for some famous designers and architects, as well as in companies selling antiques. The interiors of her studio are always sensual and bright, with touches of the past, but comfortable and not cluttered.
In response to the brief from a client seeking a family home that would reflect their love of originality, quality finishes and comfort, phoebe has delivered a living environment where textures, colour and form come together in an unique interplay.
Richly layered in textures, this room synthesizes a dialogue between the painted seagrass wallpaper, natural stone, raw linen and classic upholstery detailing. The end result exemplifies phoebe’s seemingly-effortless ability to blend modernism and classicism in a way that reflects the individual character of each client.
In this bedroom crisp stripes and flowing shapes are juxtaposed to create a unique, modern and wholly sophisticated setting.
As a seamless extension of the indoor spaces, the courtyard garden continues the theme of comfort and sophistication in a mannered, restrained blend of colour and textures, both classical and modern.
The brief for this project was to refresh and energise the interiors of a traditional sydney terrace house in a style that would provide a dramatic backdrop for the client’s outstanding collection of antique and modern furniture, traditional and contemporary artworks and eclectic objets d’art.
The house is a deceptively narrow terrace in which phoebe has cleverly created a perception of magnificent breadth by mirroring one complete wall. By ignoring outdated design maxims, such as painting walls in light colours to make a small space appear larger, phoebe has achieved the same effect by doing the exact opposite of perceived wisdom. Rich, dark colours have been used to heighten the drama and provide a canvas that highlights the client’s own talent for acquiring unique furniture and art.
The bedrooms have been designed to complement and contrast with the living areas; crisp white walls and bespoke fittings such as the curves of the moorish-inspired headboards give a softness and serenity to these more personal spaces.
The response to the brief for this project was greatly influenced by the fact that the client is a busy professional who runs her business from home, so a high degree of functionality has been incorporated into the aesthetic beauty of the finished spaces.
The home combines playfulness with sophistication, and artistry with purpose. In order to achieve this, many bespoke pieces – including lighting, mirrors and furniture – were designed by phoebe and crafted by skilled artisans under her direction.
In this private sanctuary the walls are rendered in a stucco wax finish offers a complete contrast to the brighter living and working areas of the home.
Almost everything in this home is customised, bringing a different voice and energy to every space. Phoebe worked closely with local craftsmen and artisans to design and execute each piece.
Rose bay apartment
The brief here was driven my clients desire for serenity, lightness and masculinity. The result is a home which is softly balanced due to the deliberate choice of material, furniture and furnishings. There is a sophisticated yet playful european undertone in every room.
The joinery is finished in a hand rendered venetian plaster. A perfect blend of traditional artisan craftsmanship with contemporary style.
In this commercial environment phoebe has given her client a competitive edge by delivering a space that is atypical of the standard hair salon.
Stepping inside, clients of the salon enter a place of serenity with expertly crafted fixtures and furnishings and a minimalist aesthetic tempered by unique artworks and pottery.
A strong european influence is evident in the specialty hand-rendered finishes, which, married with the raw finish of the floor and raw steel elements, celebrate beautiful craftsmanshi.
