I have a rational approach to architecture, while in furniture design I allow more freedom.
Once, Chen Su Xia had a flat on Avenue Kleber in Paris. The address was stylish, but with a significant drawback: there was a cafe nearby, in which music played loudly until two at night. “It was so noisy that it was impossible to sleep,” recalls Francopile, born in Taiwan, Chen. Her husband, Gerard Hua, a consultant to French multinationals such as Airbus and Veolia, found a way out. He asked to arrange a meeting with a real estate agent in another apartment nearby, and despite her dilapidated condition, Su Xia fell in love with her immediately.
“I thought that in the apartment for over a hundred years they didn’t make repairs,” she recalls. “These were ruins, with yellow stains on the walls and poor parquet.” But the layout was good. The apartment was flooded with daylight, and the windows overlooked the Guimet Museum.”Damien Langlois-Meurine作品 | Guimet Museum,法国浪漫主义的极致 住宅 第4张 Damien Langlois-Meurine作品 | Guimet Museum,法国浪漫主义的极致 住宅 第5张
Designed to design the interior commissioned designer Damien Langlois-Meurine. “Everything he does is always very elegant, Its interiors are discreet and luxurious. ” says Chen Su Xia. Langlois-Meurine lives in two cities: in Lisbon, he has his wife Alex and their two daughters, and the office is located on Paris-Saint-Michel Boulevard.
One of the main goals of the architect was the preservation of typical Parisian architectural features. “For me it is important to preserve traces of the past, and then integrate more modern touches there,” he says. The doorways were framed by minimalist bronze arches – a stylistic counterweight to the real stucco gables above them.
While working on the interior, Langlois-Meurine faced numerous limitations. For example, he could not move several walls due to the internal regulations of the building, so he simply swapped the kitchen and bathroom areas, and turned the guest room into an office. We also had to fight with the absence of symmetry in the living room, where it was impossible to place the fireplace in the center between the two doorways because of the pile of chimneys built into the wall. As a result, the balance was achieved thanks to an asymmetrical plaster fireplace, referring to the work of the Paris ceramist of the second half of the last century, Valentine Schlegel.
Another forte of Langlois-Meurinea is his masterful use of materials. So, he combines a simple pine tree with a more expensive limby in the study. The most interesting space in the room is the kitchen, where both the walls and the cabinet doors are lined with wood panels with tin powder coating that simulates the surface of the water. “It creates an almost immaterial effect and reflects the light very interestingly,” Damien rejoices. Chen Su Xia, this conjures up a sense of a parallel world. “It’s almost space, I seemed to go to Mars,” she says.
